What is pewter?
Pewter, a metal alloy primarily composed of tin with small amounts of other metals like copper, antimony, or bismuth, has a rich history dating back to ancient times. Once containing lead, which posed health concerns, modern pewter is now formulated to be completely lead-free, making it entirely food-safe and suitable for items like tableware and jewelry. This modern formulation ensures that pewter items are safe for everyday use and enjoyment.
Today, many pewter items, especially those with intricate designs like the ones we create, are made using a process called spin casting. This technique involves pouring molten pewter into a rubber mold that is rapidly spun. The centrifugal force from the spinning action forces the liquid metal into every detail of the mold, creating highly detailed and precise castings. This method allows for the efficient production of complex shapes and designs, while maintaining a high level of quality and consistency in each piece. After casting, the pewter is then hand-finished and polished to achieve its characteristic soft luster.
